Alternatives to detention and imprisonment
(Rules 57, 58, 60, 62, 64, Chapter 1)
In Colombia, a new law was signed in early 2023 that promotes alternatives to imprisonment for women with caregiving responsibilities who have been sentenced for up to eight years in prison to substitute prison terms for unpaid community service. This law can be applied retroactively and could lead to the release of around 5,000 women.
This law also includes the responsibility of the Ministries of Education and Commerce to design public policy of employability, education, and training for women in prison within a maximum of two years. This aims to address the current structural problem of poor or insufficient rehabilitation programmes .
