Women in prison management
(Rules 29, 30, Chapter 10)
Significant progress has been made in the Central African Republic to increase the appointment of women to managerial positions in the prison service. In June 2022, Téné Maïmouna Zoungrana, a peacekeeper from Burkina Faso, received the first United Nations Trailblazer Award for Women Justice and Corrections Officers for her work in demilitarising the prison system and her leadership role at the Ngaragba Central Prison in Bangui. Her efforts have resulted in the creation of a women-only rapid intervention team and the integration of rapid intervention training into the national penitentiary curriculum. These initiatives have enhanced the effectiveness and accountability of the Central African Republic’s penitentiary institutions and have significantly reduced prison escapes. Zoungrana’s accomplishments highlight the transformative impact of women in prison management and serve as an inspiration for further progress in promoting gender equality and empowerment in the justice and corrections sector.
