- As part of our 2020-2023 strategy we are addressing the needs of older persons in terms of sentencing, imprisonment and release to ensure their rights are protected through advocacy and the development of practical tools.
- We call for immediate and systemic reform in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic so that older persons in detention, who are at significant risk, are not detained save for exceptional cases.
- We bring the issues of life sentences to the attention of both national and international actors, in view of the impact of imprisonment has and challenges in providing end-of-life care with dignity in prison settings.
- We engage with other civil society organisations working on the rights of older persons to ensure those in prison are not forgotten.
- We are developing a monitoring tool on older persons (to be published in 2020) to better equip detention monitors with the knowledge and resources so they can address the human rights issues faced by this population.
- We seek to engage with advocacy groups working on the rights of older persons to ensure those in prison are not forgotten.
- We document the trends and developments for this population in criminal justice systems annually in our Global Prison Trends series.
