Prevention of torture and information dissemination
(Rules 25 and 70, Chapters 5 and 11)
In Argentina, the Federal Ombudsman for Prisons established the Gender and Sexual Diversity Working Team to address the lack of a gender perspective within the Federal Penitentiary Service. The team focuses on marginalised groups, including foreign women detainees and the transgender, transsexual, gay, and lesbian population. They conduct hearings and regular visits to monitor the implementation of legal provisions, such as gender recognition for transgender detainees and access to healthcare. The team also advocates for improved access for women to social benefits, like the Universal Child Allowance. Their efforts have led to the inclusion of a dedicated chapter on gender issues, including sexual orientation and gender identity, in the annual reports of the institution.
