About the Global Alliance of Civil Society on Prison Reform
Across the world, we face huge challenges: war and political upheaval, shifting donor priorities, and rising pressures on our work to see humane, human rights-based prisons. Together as civil society we believe we can better meet these challenges with strength, creativity, and solidarity. The Global Alliance of Civil Society on Prison Reform was initiated in 2025 by Penal Reform International to form a space to learn from one another, centre and amplify lived experience of imprisonment in our work, strategise collectively, and act with the power of collective action.
We are building an Alliance of civil society that:
- Work exclusively on, or have a programme dedicated to, prison reform and enhancing conditions of detention and protection of prisoners’ rights;
- Advocate for Prison reform on local, regional or international level;
- Are motivated to collaborate globally, online and in person, to speed up change;
- Includes organisations led or staffed by people with lived experience of imprisonment.
