Systemic Child Participation In Justice
This new resource from Terre des Hommes (Tdh) and The Global Initiative on Justice With Children (JWC) discusses the importance of systemic child participation in justice, emphasising the need for a shift in conventional notions to include both individual and systemic levels of participation. It explores the role of children in influencing reforms in legal and regulatory frameworks, procedures and operations, highlighting the impact on laws, policies and programmes designed for children.
The document emphasises principles such as the institutionalisation of child participation, providing a safe and respectful environment for children and recognising their voices in the development of participatory mechanisms. It draws on international standards, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child and provides examples of successful initiatives worldwide. Outlining inputs and methods for involving children effectively in the justice system and asking decision-makers to commit to these ideas, the paper highlights the significance of children themselves acting as change agents within the system itself.
