Annual Report 2022
This Annual Report outlines the impact of our work and achievements in 2022, including:
- In 2022 we supported national authorities, civil society and other stakeholders across 15 countries in five regions to bring change so that ultimately the human rights of people in contact with criminal justice systems are better protected. We put people at the heart of our work, focusing on marginalised and discriminated against groups, contributing to leaving no one behind as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
- In a year in which the world reflected on how it had responded to the first pandemic of its kind in generations, PRI issued research and corresponding recommendations, practical models and analysis so lessons could be identified and applied in the future. It published a framework for prisons on good governance, using case studies from Kazakhstan and Kenya. PRI undertook research on impacts of the pandemic on probation systems; this was translated into a 10-point plan on crisis-ready non-custodial sanctions and measures.
- Our annual flagship publication, Global Prison Trends 2022, published in May, with the Thailand Institute of Justice documented the going impacts of the harsh restrictions imposed as part of pandemic responses on criminal justice systems, and particularly on detained people. The report also exposed that, rather than reducing the number of people in prison, many governments are instead increasing prison capacity, with a significant expansion in the global prison estate in the past year.
- We continued to engage an increasing number of stakeholders, allies, and new audiences, demonstrated through the rising number of visitors to our website and our publications accessed.
- Our work in 2022 showed again that PRI is a valued civil society partner to many organisations and agencies. With civil society facing extreme pressures, from serious funding shortages to closing civic space, we worked together collaboratively to pursuing our goals. We built the capacity of civil society organisations in a range of countries and contexts, from Algeria, Sudan and Central African Republic.
