Annual Report
Annual Report 2021
PRI’s Annual Report outlines the impact of our work and achievements in 2021 nationally, regionally and internationally.
Highlights in 2021 included:
- Publication of the Global Prison Trends 2021, in partnership with the Thailand Institute of Justice (our annual flagship publication);
- 17 expert blogs, covering topics from period poverty in prison to corporal punishment in penal systems, life imprisonment of children, and foreign nationals in prison and probation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The 2021 World Congress on Justice with Children brought together more than 4,800 children, policymakers, legal practitioners, academics, and civil society actors online from over 100 countries to explore best practices, foster scientific cooperation, and raise awareness on child-friendly justice.
- PRI responded to the ongoing global pandemic as new waves of COVID-19 continued to impact criminal
justice systems and those in them. We distributed PPE to prisons across Uganda, developed a health emergency response protocol for the prison directorate in Algeria, and carried out prison visits in Georgia. - We examined the impacts of COVID-19 on the use, implementation, and experience of non-custodial sanctions in Europe and beyond, and advocated for country-specific recommendations and internationally applicable guidance for more effective, resilient and human rights-based sentencing and probation practices.
- In Central Asia, a regional workshop brought together 55 CSOs, alongside Ombudsperson representatives
from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on independent monitoring of the prison systems. - In Yemen, PRI provided specialised trainings to 457 female police officers at the female police academy that we previously established outside of Aden with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands.
- In Sudan, we carried out an assessment of the penitentiary system to build momentum for change.
- In Central African Republic, PRI organised vocational training – the first of its kind – for 62 young people, including 7 women, who were trained for three months in carpentry, plumbing, and the manufacture of solar ovens.
