Sudan: PRI welcomes the release of Dr Amin Mekki Medani
PRI staff and Board welcome the news that Dr Medani, for many years a PRI Board Member and distinguished Sudanese human rights lawyer and advocate, was released from prison on 9 April and the case against him dropped.
Dr Amin Mekki Medani and two fellow human rights defenders, Farouq Abu Eissa and Dr Farah Ibrahim Mohamed Alagar, were arrested on 6 December following the signing of the ‘Sudan Call’, an opposition political declaration calling for an end to one-party rule and a transitional government.
PRI Chair, David Daubney, says:
“We are delighted to hear of the release of our colleague, Dr Medani, a tireless and widely respected advocate for criminal justice and penal reform in the region and beyond. PRI is against the use of arbitrary imprisonment in all circumstances.”
