Special panel and reception on children deprived of liberty: The Call for a Global Study on 14 October
PRI is among more than 50 leading non-governmental organisations that are urging members of the UN General Assembly to recommend a high-level UN Study on Children Deprived of Liberty to collect sorely needed information on children in detention worldwide.
A Global Study is needed in order to accurately define the scope of the problem, identify good practices, and make recommendations that can shape more effective policies and practices.
A special panel and reception will take place in New York on:
14 October 2014 at 6:30 – 8pm (EDT)
at the Institute of International Education, 12th Floor, 809 UN Plaza, NYC.
Speakers at this event include Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative to the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, Kirsten Sandberg, Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and Susan Bissell, Chief of Child Protection at UNICEF.
A reception will follow.
The event is being sponsored by the Missions of Ethiopia, Norway, Qatar, and Uruguay, Defence for Children International and Human Rights Watch on behalf of the NGO Panel for the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, and the Institute of International Education.
