PRI is launching Global Prison Trends 2026 report
Join us at our CCPCJ35 side event! Organised by PRI, and supported by the Thailand Institute of Justice and the Latin American Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (ILANUD), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the International Legal Foundation, Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, and Youth Rise.

This side event marks the launch of Global Prison Trends 2026, providing a data-driven analysis of key developments in prison systems worldwide. The global prison population is estimated at 11.7 million people, alongside persistent overcrowding and the continued overuse of pre-trial detention. The report examines pressures on the rule of law, the increasing role of organised crime in prisons and the criminalisation of poverty and marginalised groups. It also analyses the impact of armed conflict on detention systems, including ongoing gaps in healthcare and mental health provision.
