Regional Congress on the Death Penalty in Jordan: A major first

Taghreed Jaber, PRI Regional Director for Middle East and North Africa; and Suzanne Jabbour, Executive Director of Restart Centre for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture, Chair of the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture, and PRI Board Member.
On 11 and 12 July 2023, for the first time in the Middle East, Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) and their partners Penal Reform International and Adaleh Center for Human Rights Studies, is holding a regional congress on the death penalty in Jordan.
It brings together experts, lawyers, judges, academics, NGO representatives, journalists and diplomats who will discuss the issue of the death penalty and its implications in the region. At least 200 participants are expected to attend from countries such as Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Syria, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
“The Middle East is at the heart of the realities of the death penalty worldwide. Yet the situation is evolving rapidly, even within the region. Iran, Egypt and Saudi Arabia are increasingly the exceptions. The Amman Congress will shed light on these disparate realities.” Raphaël Chenuil-Hazan, ECPM’s Executive Director
