PRI MENA IN ALGERIA – June 2024
Algeria, Penal Reform International, in collaboration with the National Commission for the Protection and Promotion of Childhood, the General Directorate of Prison Administration and Reintegration, the National Council for Human Rights, and with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Algeria, organised a national conference titled “The Partnership between Algerian Authorities and Civil Society Organisations: A Model for Joint Cooperation.” The conference saw the participation of over 100 attendees, including ambassadors from the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, as well as officials from various state institutions. During the event, multiple working papers and presentations were delivered, highlighting areas of cooperation between different institutions and civil society. Additionally, a roadmap was presented to outline and enhance the future path of cooperation.

PRI MENA IN LIBYA – May 2024
Libya, Penal Reform International, in collaboration with the Libyan Center for Democracy and Human Rights and with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the Middle East and North Africa Scholarship Programme managed by Nuffic, organized a training and discussion workshop on: “Strengthening the Foundations of Justice: Building a Resilient and Inclusive Justice System in Libya.” The training aimed to build the capacity of the target group on effective methods for establishing a resilient and efficient justice system that upholds the principles of the rule of law and human rights in the aftermath of conflict. It focused on the roles of both governmental and non-governmental institutions in facilitating access to justice and protecting the rights of the most vulnerable groups, including migrants, refugees, IDPs, women, young people, children, and detained persons.
The workshop also created a platform for discussing and exploring methods for effective collaboration between governmental justice institutions and civil society organizations. This collaboration aims to build joint initiatives that support access to justice and enhance strategic technical assistance to governmental justice institutions in their roles of enhancing accountability and ending impunity. The training included examples from Yemen, Iraq, and Tunisia, and was tailored to the needs of the target group, identified through a pre-assessment. Additionally, a comprehensive gender analysis was conducted, and its findings were integrated into the training program to ensure inclusivity and address the specific needs of all genders.

The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to outline the general framework for enhancing cooperation in the fields of protecting the rule of law and human rights, by engaging in capacity-building assistance to counter terrorism and combat violent extremism within the limits of their respective mandates, regulations, rules, policies, and relevant procedures.
