Launch of Briefing on Parliamentarians and Penal Reform
On 3 April 2012 in Kampala at a side event, hosted by Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) to the 126th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, PRI launched its Briefing “What parliamentarians can do to work on penal reform”.
With almost 60 participants from Ugandan parliament, representatives of the penitentiary system and NGOs, the interest in the event was local but gratifying, and included Ugandan media.
Rt. Hon. Ann Clywd MP (UK), Member of the Inter Parliamentary Union on
the Human Rights of Parliamentarians gave an overview of penal reform issues, Rt. Hon. Ken Lukyamuzi Ugandan MP, raised issues related to the penal system in Uganda. PRI’s Andrea Huber presented the briefing and highlighted the key role of parliamentarians in penal reform.
