Upholding rights and improving living conditions in six prisons in Sudan
Through a fund from the European Union, PRI is playing a pivotal role in addressing the needs of detainees amidst the current devastating conflict.
Started in June 2023, the project “Enhancing Rule of Law and People’s Access to Justice in Sudan” has led transformative efforts to improve prison conditions, advocate for the rights of vulnerable people in prison and establish comprehensive support systems for female survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).
Noteworthy achievements to date include enhancing living conditions at Wad Madani prison by creating a mother and baby unit to protect women’s rights and the wellbeing of children, improving the kitchen to uphold the right to food, renovating the health clinic to ensure the right to the highest attainable standards of health and upgrading the sewage system and toilets to safeguard the right to humane conditions. PRI has placed a focused emphasis on aiding female survivors of GBV amidst other structural improvements. This entails implementing targeted support, such as legal assistance and psychological care to facilitate their recovery and safeguard their rights. These efforts are pivotal in ensuring that the rights of GBV survivors are protected, advocating for their dignity and empowerment within the detention system.
Additionally, PRI promptly responded to a Cholera outbreak in Wad Madani Prison in November, which was swiftly addressed following the detection of cases among imprisoned people.
Looking ahead, PRI intends to broaden healthcare enhancement efforts to more prisons, focusing on modernising medical infrastructure and advancing hygiene education to improve the health conditions of detainees throughout Sudan. We are also keen on partnering with key stakeholders to roll out these health initiatives in additional correctional facilities, guaranteeing that every person benefits from enhanced healthcare services and hygiene education.
