PRI’s Annual Report 2016
PRI’s Annual Report 2016 outlines the impact of our work and achievements over the past year.
Highlights in 2016 included:
- Continued global promotion of the Nelson Mandela Rules (the revised Standard Minimum Rules for the treatment of prisoners), with our regional offices holding workshops and training on the rules in a number of countries. In collaboration with the UK government, PRI published a Short Guide to the Nelson Mandela Rules, which is now available in eight languages.
- Our work to promote the use of alternatives to detention continued across our regional offices, with our South Caucasus office completing a programme to develop and strengthen probation services in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
- A pilot project with partner Kenya Probation Service was implemented to develop a gender-sensitive approach to the delivery of community sanctions in Kenya. The subsequent research report was launched in October.
- Our annual flagship publication, Global Prison Trends 2016, was launched at the Crime Commission in May. The report, which included a Special Focus section on prison staff, received positive feedback from a wide range of stakeholders.
- PRI’s Middle East and North Africa (MENA) office worked with partners in Yemen to deliver wide-ranging reform to the criminal justice system and deliver workshops in seven prisons.
- We continued to share our learning on managing violent extremism and radicalised prisoners, and our regional offices held roundtable meetings and trainings in Kazakhstan, Morocco, Tunisia, Yemen and Algeria.
- As part of a three-year programme to end violence against children in Central Asia, over 300 staff in places of detention received training on international standards, laws and good practice.
