PRI contributes to consultation on prison health
Public Health England (PHE), in partnership with the World Health Organization Health in Prisons Programme (WHO HIPP), held its fourth annual international Health and Justice Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark from 3-4 November 2016. A meeting report of the conference is now available.
The main aim of the conference was to share good practice on prison health focusing on the topic of deaths in custody. Speakers addressed causes of deaths within the prison settings as well as effective prevention strategies for reducing the high mortality that the prison population experience as compared to the general population. WHO/Europe Member State representatives and international experts shared their experiences and also reported on specific issues or progress within parts of the European Region, as well as beyond.
Alison Hannah, Executive Director of Penal Reform International, addressed the conference on reaching marginalized groups and the challenges that prisoners faced in health care provision.
Delegates included representatives of Member States from health and justice organisations as well as representatives of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, International Committee of the Red Cross, and Council of Europe.
