PRI to join high-level panel on protecting girls in criminal justice systems at the UN General Assembly
Despite a strong international framework designed to prevent and respond to violence against girls in both public and private spheres, the social status of women and girls, together with deep-rooted discriminatory attitudes often compromise the responses of criminal justice systems to address gender-based violence committed against them.
Girls who fall victim to violence and exploitation run the risk of being criminalised and exposed to harassment, unlawful deprivation of liberty and inhuman punishment. Perpetrators are often not held accountable or deterred.
Later this week, on Friday 16 October, the Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Violence against Children (SRSG-VAC) and UNODC have organised a high-level panel to discuss strategies and promising practices to improve protection of girls from violence in the criminal justice system.
PRI’s Policy Director, Andrea Huber, will participate on the panel, which will be moderated by the SRSG-VAC, Marta Santos Pais.
