PRI and the Swedish Institute co-hosted a conference which took place in Alexandria, Egypt, in May 2008. Eminent guest speakers and participants were invited from across the Arab region. The central objective of the conference was to consolidate the prospects of a moratorium on the death penalty in those countries in the Middle East and North Africa region which have started to renounce the practice, and to encourage retentionist countries to reconsider their position on the death penalty.

The conference ended with the adoption of the Alexandria Declaration, echoing the determination of the participants to move towards the abolition of the death penalty by complying with the UN General Assembly resolution on a moratorium on Executions.
