PRI welcomes new legal aid guidelines

Printer-friendly version

PRI is delighted that the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice has, after some negotiation, adopted the Principles and Guidelines on Access to Legal Aid in Criminal Justice Systems.

They highlight the crucial role of  legal aid in giving access to justice for everyone, including those who are poor and marginalised. The principles and guidelines are a great step forward in setting out clear guidance as to how such a system can be adapted to suit each country's circumstances.

The resolution will be adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2012. The text is shortly to appear on the UN website and we will post it when it does.
